Sweden was in a union with Denmark, when young Gustav Eriksson Vasa stopped in Salen and returned to Mora to lead the uprising against the occupation forces during his flight from the Danish king. Gustav Eriksson eventually united the realm and became Sweden’s first king, better known under the name Gustav Vasa.

As a commemoration of Gustav Vasa, Vasaloppet started in 1922. Vasaloppet starts from Salen, approximately 350km Northwest from Stockholm, and finishes in Mora, making the race 90km. Today, more than 40,000 skiers from more than 37 countries join the race held on the 1st Sunday of March.

Being inspired by the Vasaloppet in Sweden, people who were engaged in cross country ski with passion finally made the 1st International Vasa Skiing Competition in Asahikawa happen on 21st March 1981, with 1,800 skiers. The race was renamed to “Vasaloppet Japan” from the 23rd race in 2003 and from the 32nd Vasaloppet Japan in 2012, the leisure ski changed its race site to Kita-saito area, close to Asahikawa station.
